The Latest on the Afrobeat Scene in LA// Meet LA based Nigerian Afrobeat artist Meaku
Meaku’s new EP has us swaying and grooving the entire album. One of the great things I love about his ‘Rooted’ EP is the sense of consistency across the board in terms of sound production, voice and delivery.
Meaku has been a constant fixture on both the underground and mixtape feature scene in the International Afrobeat music scene for years. Hypnotic, highly energetic, and seamless from start to finish Rooted features eight songs that range from sultry to club bangers. “Straight Up” gives us a glimpse of how the West Coast aesthetic has influenced his music style. “Study Your Body” a track included as a bonus on the EP has already picked up steam on music streaming websites prior to the release. His hit single “Choo Choo” was recently added to Spotify’s Dancehall Queen play list.
Additionally, “All I See Is You” has racked up an impressive 2.3 million streams on Spotify prior to the release of the project. Ballads also feature heavily on the EP in addition to a few songs that are guaranteed to invoke a strong sensual mood. Meaku delivers a beautifully crafted musical project that is a powerful addition to this year’s crop of albums by African artists. His unique singing style and slick vocals deliver everything his fans have been waiting for.
There are tracks to suit every emotion and Cachet caught up with Meaku to shoot an exclusive photo shoot inspired by his latest EP. We also got to hang out with him in his studio as well. Meaku is a talented composer, producer and singer. His studio often has late night jam sessions packed with hip hop artists and traveling Afrobeat artist when they are in town from abroad or in LA during award season or to shoot a music video.
